W3 is 20 Years Old!

Wait! What is W3? What if it was said as www…? Oh yeah. That is how it started it out 20 years ago today-publicly. 1993 was when this all began-the constant contact, immediate information and world at our finger tips. I recall sitting in my 5th grade classroom and trying to figure out what the big deal was with W3 and now here I am using it as my career!

So here it is! The image to the left is a screen shot of the first page. No colors. No fancy text.   No fancy anything. This is as basic is it comes.

So that gets me thinking...What will websites look like in 20 years?

It would be very exciting to say “Take your students to the computer lab and have them create a mock up of their perfect website.” The problem is that so many are closed for state testing, atleast in Virginia.

The same task can be accomplished the good-ole-fashioned way with poster board, markers, and any other craft items you can get your hands on. Give the students some parameters to follow-your website must have:

  • main idea-what is the purpose?
  • catchy title
  • navigation buttons-if their site has more than one page of products
  • contact information
  • interesting them, yet it doesn’t take away from the content of the site
  • organized area to display products
  • directions or purpose of each product
