Blank Canvas

Classroom teachers are told to use more technology. Use more programs. Administration may tell you to use the labs more often. So lessons are created. Often students are creating stories and typing them up in the labs. This is great because we all know that typing  keyboarding is a lifelong skill. There are a plethora of other things that can be created using a computer. I’m not talking about creating something based off of a website but giving students a blank canvas to develop a poster, pamphlet or sign using presentation software.

When given the opportunity, will your students know how to create that poster? Yes, it may seem elementary, or archaic to some, but before you can learn how to use all of the other tools you have got to learn how to use the most basic ones. Think about it, before a mountain biker can take on a decline maneuvering between logs, branches and rocks they first have to learn to jump over a curb.

Below are some locations that have precreated lessons or videos to teach you how to use the skills. If you prefer more hands on work, contact your school’s technology teacher. Their job is to help you and you may be surprised where the conversation may lead to.

Remember that before entering the lab, give the students a goal. Let them know the deadline (2-4 days) but also give them a daily deadline. “When we leave the lab today, you will have completed steps 1-3.” This will make the project seem less overwhelming and off an easier to achieve goal.
